Ewigkeit
Documentary / 2022
“A poetic documentary that, through the life of Harry Matschulat, a countryside man and Christian pastor from an old German colony in the south of Brazil, reflects on time and eternity through family archive imagery.”
About
After a long journey to Formosa, one of the first German colonies in southern Brazil, Aron, his grandson and filmmaker, reunites with his grandfather, a countryside man and Christian pastor, Harry Matschulat, to conduct an interview about his life. Harry worked his entire life, from childhood to old age, in the countryside, and built his house with his own hands. This interview film would be a short documentary called “The Hands of my Grandfather” However, Harry’s ailing health prevents the recording. After the interviews, during the film editing process, Aron comes across a confession of faith from his grandfather that gives a new direction to his creative impulse. Thus, “Ewigkeit” is born: German for “Eternity,” a poetic documentary that uses family archive imagery to explore time, life, death, and eternity. The film is a personal and intimate journey. Created in homage to his recently deceased grandfather, it reflects Aron’s decision to abandon a traditional interview approach in favor of a more sensory expression of life and time. “Ewigkeit” immerses the viewer in the world where Harry lived, his environment, his family, and his final years, offering a sensory experience that transcends time and brings eternity to our earthly world.
